Do you believe in second chances? At the SVRU we believe in supporting people who are putting in the graft to change their lives. One of the most powerful ways to help a person help themselves is to open the door to employment. A job can change the course of a person’s whole life, help them become a good role model for their children and show others in their community that a positive future is possible.
It’s not just talk at the SVRU. For years now we’ve offered people the chance to leave their offences in the past and work with us. Whether it’s helping out behind the scenes of major events like Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo or working as part of the SVRU team.
Our social enterprise Street & Arrow serves up more than just tasty modern street food in the Partick area of Glasgow. We also dish up second chances with employees offered a year’s paid employment and mentoring. Iain Murray runs the business and he believes employers have a lot to gain from giving people a second chance: “There is a huge untapped resource out there of people who you might not consider hiring because of things they’ve done in the past. Street & Arrow has shown that if you give someone a second chance who hasn’t been given an opportunity by anyone else, often you’ll be repaid with a loyal, hardworking and reliable employee.”
Rebecca* started working with Street & Arrow. After a year’s hard graft with the team she graduated and was hired full time to work on the administration side of the business where we are supporting her as she studies for additional qualifications. Rebecca said: “Street & Arrow has not only given me the chance to change but it has given me the tools to better my life as a whole. I am now in my second year of working with Street & Arrow and I am half way through completing my SVQ Level 3 in business administration. My confidence has grown in leaps and bounds and it’s all down to Street & Arrow seeing my worth and helping me along the way. I will be forever grateful for what this amazing organisation has done for me. They have helped me become the person I was always meant to be.”
If you are an employer and believe you could help give someone a second chance then we can offer guidance and support in the process. We’ve learnt a lot over the years and we’re happy to pass on the knowledge we’ve gathered in that time. Please just drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01786 896785
